Snippets of California Rainbow History

1923 Rainbow began in California. The Worthy Grand Matron in California, Order of the Eastern Star, appointed a committee to investigate an order for young girls - it was Rainbow.

The first Assembly in California, San Francisco, was instituted by Worthy Matrons and 55 girls were initiated. Mrs. Katherine Winslow was the first Mother Advisor.

1931 California's first Grand Assembly at Golden Gate Commandery Building in San Francisco. Our First Grand Worthy Advisor, Frances Rundall of Petaluma Assembly presided.

To acquaint members of one assembly in San Francisco with the events and activities of the other three assemblies operating in San Francisco, the decision was made to publish a monthly newspaper. The first issue of the Pot of Gold was published under the direction of Eva Noel, the first editor, who later became Grand Worthy Advisor.

1932 At Grand Assembly in Stockton this year, the Pot of Gold was adopted as the official publication of California Rainbow.
1937 46 Assemblies

Grand Worthy Advisor Eleanor Darr of Santa Cruz Assembly was the first to receive the traditional GWA pass-down pin. It was presented to her by Mrs. Kate Nichols, Supreme Inspector.

1940 First Grand Assembly in the south with Pasadena hosting the delegates.

Leta dal Porto was first Rainbow Girl to preside over Supreme Assembly (Cleveland, OH)

1943 93 Assemblies
1947 Supreme Deputy, Cornelia Cooper became Supreme Inspector
1949 The Pot of Gold which had been published monthly, became a bimonthly publication.
1950 Supreme Assembly held in Long Beach, July 16 to 20, 1950
1951 Flo McDonald appointed Supreme Deputy
1952 133 Assemblies
1954 Supreme Deputy, Flo McDonald became Supreme Inspector
1955 159 Assemblies
1957 First mascot - corduroy rabbits made by hospital patients in San Bernardino as a therapy project. Given to 1957-58 Grand Officers.
1960 Our order became the "International Order of Rainbow for Girls"

228 Assemblies with over 19,000 members

1961 At Grand Assembly, the Grand Representatives were given new pins designating their offices.
1962 Supreme Assembly was held at the Conrad Hilton Hotel in Chicago, IL, July 9-12

Mrs. Flo McDonald, Supreme Inspector in California, became Supreme Religion.

It was noted that Venora Duncan, a Past Worthy Advisor of Oakland Assembly in 1959 was one of the first recipients of a Rainbow Scholarship.

The Grand Assembly issue of the Pot of Gold reported that there were 226 Assemblies and 19,544 Rainbow Girls in California.

1963 Carol Mae Jensen, a charter member of Vallejo Assembly in 1925 and Grand Love, 1931, was Worthy Grand Matron in 1963. She was the first Rainbow Girl to become Worthy Grand Matron.

1966 As of Grand Assembly, 17026 Rainbow Girls in California.
1970 Supreme Assembly in Phoenix, AZ
1976 Supreme Assembly in Anaheim, CA
1978 Self serve gas at 67 cents a gallon

Beginning of Bow Buddy look-alike dresses

Assemblies started saying Rainbow Prayer before Rainbow Dreams at the close of meetings. The prayer was written in 1968 by Grand Worthy Advisor Kendra Kessel.

Prior to this year the Grand Officers would suddenly stand up during a sister Grand Officer's reception to sing her the song. Beginning this year, it was done immediately after their presentation to her.

1979 Mr. James T. Edkins, California's first State Rainbow Dad passed away

Manteca, Napa and Santa Maria Assemblies each had 105 members. Vallejo had 101 while Pleasanton had 99 and Novato had 80.

June issue of the Pot of Gold revealed that California was only 64 members away from being the largest jurisdiction.

1981 First year of Grand Talent, Leta DalPorto-Darwin, PGWA 1940 was first Director of Talent and served until 1990
1988 Supreme Assembly in Mobile, Alabama
1989 At the end of the year, membership was 3726 girls in 150 assemblies.
1990 Supreme Assembly in Phoenix, Arizona (July 23-25)
  • Parents and Guardians now allowed to attend Meetings
  • Members of Amaranth allowed to attend Meetings
  • Term limit adopted for Supreme Officers. Established two year term.

Cathy Gardner was appointed Director of Talent and served until 1994

1994 Sara Fogle Miholick, PGWA 1981, was appointed Director of Talent. She was the GWA that helped institute the Talent Competition
2000 Supreme Assembly in Buffalo, New York

Mrs. Lind steps down as Supreme Inspector

Mrs. Sara Lee Martin becomes Supreme Deputy
