Rainbow began in
California. The Worthy Grand Matron in California, Order of the Eastern Star, appointed a
committee to investigate an order for young girls - it was Rainbow. The first Assembly in California, San Francisco, was
instituted by Worthy Matrons and 55 girls were initiated. Mrs. Katherine Winslow was the
first Mother Advisor. |

California's first Grand
Assembly at Golden Gate Commandery Building in San Francisco. Our First Grand Worthy
Advisor, Frances Rundall of Petaluma Assembly presided. To
acquaint members of one assembly in San Francisco with the
events and activities of the other three assemblies operating in San Francisco, the
decision was made to publish a monthly newspaper. The first issue of the Pot of Gold was
published under the direction of Eva Noel, the first editor, who later became Grand Worthy
Advisor. |

Conrad Hilton Hotel in Chicago, IL, July 9-12 Mrs.
Flo McDonald, Supreme Inspector in California, became Supreme Religion.
It was noted that Venora Duncan, a Past Worthy
Advisor of Oakland Assembly in 1959 was one of the first recipients of a Rainbow
Scholarship.
The Grand Assembly issue of the Pot of Gold
reported that there were 226 Assemblies and 19,544 Rainbow Girls in California. |

Carol Mae Jensen, a
charter member of Vallejo Assembly in 1925 and Grand Love, 1931, was Worthy Grand Matron
in 1963. She was the first Rainbow Girl to become Worthy Grand Matron. |

Assemblies started saying Rainbow Prayer before
Rainbow Dreams at the close of meetings. The prayer was written in 1968 by Grand Worthy
Advisor Kendra Kessel.
Prior to this year the Grand Officers would
suddenly stand up during a sister Grand Officer's reception to sing her the song.
Beginning this year, it was done immediately after their presentation to her.

Mr. James T. Edkins,
California's first State Rainbow Dad passed away Manteca, Napa and Santa Maria Assemblies each had 105 members. Vallejo had 101
while Pleasanton had 99 and Novato had 80.

revealed that California was only 64 members away from being the largest jurisdiction. |
